About me

about me

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.” – Lao Tzu

My name is Noel Lau. And I am a nomad.

Ever since I was a child, I dreamed about travelling the world. On one of my birthday, I was given a globe as a present and I would lie in bed, spin the globe and have my finger randomly stop at a point, and I would daydream what that strange land was like, what exotic food they eat and what kind of life the people there had. (That was before the age of the internet)

But that dream took a backseat when I followed the “normal” path of life. Because in Asian society, one’s dream and ambition play second fiddle to what your family and community expect you to do with your life. So on the verge of turning 30 with a budding corporate career, I felt empty. I felt that I was living a life that wasn’t mine. A life that was slowly smothering me with its daily routine and established life pattern. And that’s when I made the most important decision of my life.

I quit my job, gave up everything I had going on for me and cut all unnecessary ties. I wanted to start a new chapter of my life. Little did I know that it was going to be a completely different book. And in 2004 I left my home with a small backpack but a bundle of dreams and a healthy dose of wanderlust.

I had given up a cushy life for a more challenging one, where I don’t have a home and I take all kinds of jobs to survive. I had worked as barista in London, English teacher in Spain, street artist in Colombia, etc.But I have also scaled the Great Wall of China, dived in the Red Sea, walked the ancient pilgrimage road in Spain, conquered Machu Picchu, etc.

I have discovered the joy of living. A joy so potent that 10 years and 50+ countries later I continue to carry my backpack through beaten and unbeaten path to experience the amazing feeling that only life on the road could bring: being alive.

Discovery is what I live for. Whether it is exploring new places, learning about new cultures or the inner journey of self discovery.

This site is where I share my experiences, my thoughts and my journey with you. In the hope to motivate myself and inspire you to follow your dreams. Would you join me?
