Poker is a gambling game where players try to make the best poker hand possible. The objective is to beat your opponents’ hands, and win the pot. Typically, there are two or more rounds of betting, but a single round can also be used.
The first round begins with each player making an ante, or “buy in” bet. This bet is usually $1 or $5. Once each player makes a bet, the cards are dealt clockwise around the table.
Players are given five cards, and each player can use any of the cards to make a poker hand. Five of a kind is the highest possible hand. If no one has a five of a kind, a high card breaks ties.
When a player has a pair or better, he can then raise the bet. If there is no raise, a player can either fold or check.
After checking, a player can discard up to three cards. They can then choose to call or match the bet.
The player who wins the pot gets the kitty, which is a special fund for each player. This fund pays for new decks of cards. A player who leaves the game before the pot is settled forfeits his right to the pot.
A player who wins the pot can also win a side pot. Some poker games allow certain wild cards to be placed in the pot. These are called wilds, and they can be in any suit.
