A casino, or gambling house, is an establishment for certain types of gambling. Casinos are often combined with hotels, restaurants, retail shops, and other tourist attractions. Some casinos are known for hosting celebrity entertainment events, such as concerts and stand-up comedy. Others are known for their luxurious settings and facilities, such as the Bellagio in Las Vegas, or the Château de Monte-Carlo in Monaco.
There are three general categories of casino games: gaming machines, table games, and random number games. Gaming machines are operated by computerized or mechanical devices and typically pay out winnings based on the selection of random numbers. Table games, such as blackjack and craps, involve one or more players competing against the house and are conducted by croupiers. In some table games, such as poker, players compete against each other rather than against the house. The house earns money from these games by taking a commission, or rake, from the players.
Casinos are a popular form of recreation and an important source of income for many countries, especially in Europe where casino gambling became legalized during the latter half of the 20th century. In addition to offering games of chance, some casinos offer a variety of other gambling activities such as racing, off-track horse betting, and bingo. Most of these activities are regulated by local laws and/or by the national government. Those that are not regulated by law may operate illegally. Some jurisdictions have banned certain kinds of casino gambling, such as sports-themed ones.
